PAGE SEVEN MY STORY

In 1968 my grandfather and mother went down to the local Ford dealership and special ordered a 1968 XL Fastback GT. It was Meadowlark yellow with black GT stripes. It had Black interior with full length console and bucket seats. Under the hood was a 390 4V and C6 auto. In 1969 my Grandfather gave the car to my mother as a graduation gift.

As things would happen my mother was forced to sell the car in 1981. The man who bought the car already had one XL Fastback but it wasn't a GT. He had wrecked his on the interstate and needed the parts off of my mom's to repair his. Well, my mother wouldn't go for that. She asked the man to promise he would not destroy the car. He promised her that he would not. So she sold the car to him, he lived in a town called Brooks.

In later years I would ask my mom,"What was you're XL like". And she would burst into tears, because she loved the car and never wanted to sell it. So I made a promise to myself that I would someday find the car buy it and give it back to my mom.

In 1992 I came across a 1968 XL Fastback. It was not my mom's. It was Green with a black interior with a 390 4V and C6. I fell in love with the car and bought it.

In 1996 I was looking through the Atlanta advertiser a noticed that someone was parting out a 1968 XL. I called the man and discovered that it was red in color with a 302. Not my mom's. But I needed a few parts for mine so I went to see the car the get some trim off of it. The man said he knew a guy in BROOKS who has four or five of these cars. My heart jumped. I asked the man if he knew the man in Brook's name or phone no. He said "No, but I'll tell you how to get to his house".

That next Saturday my younger brother and I took a little trip down to Brooks. Following the directions the other man had given me I soon found the man in Brook's house. Under his carport sat a very beautiful BLUE 1968 XL Fastback. It was the one he had wrecked on the Interstate. Right beside it was my mom's XL GT. Exactly as promised he did not tear it apart, in fact he had it repainted and was driving it daily.

It looked beautiful, my heart fluttered at the sight of it. All the years of searching and the car was less than 20 miles from my house. The man introduced himself as Jerry. Jerry asked where we were from, we said Griffin, I told Jerry that I had a 1968 XL and wondered if he had any parts. Jerry said "Hey I bought that Yellow One in Griffin".

I then asked Jerry if he would sell the yellow one. He said "NO, I love it to much to sell". I then said "That's too bad because my mother sure would like to have it back.

Since then Jerry and I have become good friends. He still won't sell the car to me, But he did promise it to me. So oneday the car will be mine, After much thought I decided to keep the car for myself and just let my mom drive it once in a while, HA HA HA. Well, that's about it. Now you know my story and why I'm in love with the 1968 Ford XL Fastback.

In 2000 I found another 1968 XL that I just had to have. It's the green one on the home page.

Below are a few PICS of Jerry's (My mom's) XL Fastback GT.
